Firefox causing lockup in MacBookPro

For about a year I've been getting the whirling, multi-colored beachball on my MacBook.  This only happens when I am using Firefox.  If I use Safari, the browser which came with the machine I can get through my session with no problems.

I have updated Firefox constantly throughout the entire time.  All of my bookmarks and preferences are synced in Firefox with my older PC machines.  When I fire up one of my older PC laptops, Firefox functions flawlessly.  The lockup only happens in Mac.  The rainbow globe goes on forever and I have to shut the computer down by holding the power button down until it shuts.

I bought something called "Mac Keeper Pro" which supposedly cleans a Mac but it does not help with Firefox.

Has anyone else had this happen?

Yep.  Safari is my primary browser.  Chrome is my backup if Safari has issues, which isn't much of a problem any more.  Earlier versions of Safari did not work on some web sites, but version 8 pretty much always works.  And AdBlock works great with it.

What I liked about Firefox is that it has a master password feature.  Safari doesn't do that, it simply has the password for the particular site you've navigated to in the form of asterisks.

Also, Firefox allows me to sync with other computers I use which means all my Bookmarks and Passwords stay updated.

All I've ever heard is good things about Firefox so yes, I'd like to fix it if possible.

Safari does that too.  OSX/iCloud/iOS also automatically syncs contacts and calendars too.  You don't need to use iCloud (there are other services that provide the same thing), but it's free and works great.

I would like to thank those who have so far responded to my inquiry.  With respect to those folks, if there is anyone on the forum who has run into this problem and knows of a fix that doesn't involve:

a) getting rid of the mac

b) getting rid of firefox

I would appreciate hearing from them.  I know there are quite a few knowledgable computer geeks on our forum.

Just seeing this thread, now, Vince.  I cleared up a similar problem with
my wife's mac (Safari) by clearing her cache. My advice is to search for methods to clear
up the cache files for Safari and apply them to the firefox directories. I suspect
the procedures are identical with the exception of the directory name.
